The worlds fastest gentle, sterile benchtop cell sorter: Highway1 Automated high-throughput, scalable, gentle cell sorting for research and therapeutic applications. & at less than 100K USD Powered by VACS (vortex actuated cell sorting), a new microfluidic cell sorter technology, the Highway1 reduces the cost and complexity of cell sorting and achieves far higher throughput than existing platforms, thus making cell sorting accessible to every laboratory as well as enabling new therapeutic applications. Highway1 presents advantages for speed (high rates for purity and enrichment modes), gentleness (no loss of cell viability and function) and sterility/biocompatibility (with GMP compatibility)

 Press Releases

  • The Highway1 delivers high-speed, sterile, scalable cell sorting for applications in research and therapeutics. Sorting is done via VACSTM (Vortex Actuated Cell Sorting). VACSTM is a new technology for deflecting cells in a fluorescence flow cytometer. A minute vapour bubble is produced that combined with a precision microfluidic geometry creates a gentle vortex, separating cells into different sorts up to a rate of 37000 cell a second.  Thus enabling fast, gentle, scalable microfluidic cell sorting, with no need for sheath fluid, and fully sterile GMP compliant sort cartridges. For the invention of VACSTM, Cellular Highways were awarded the 2020 Lee Lucas Award by the Institute of Physics.

The Highway1 is so simple to use, you can come and see a sort at our booth (#432). Cellular Highways believe that the Highway1 will allow laboratories to take charge of their own cell sorting, with all the benefits of gentle sorting, but the performance of conventional cell sorting.

Cellular Highways was founded to take fluorescence-based cell sorting into new medical and research applications, requiring fast, gentle, sterile, scalable cell sorting, using the unique potential of the VACS technology. Cellular Highways is a spin-out from TTP plc, based in Melbourn Science Park, Cambridgeshire, UK.

 Products

  • Highway1: the fastest gentle, sterile cell sorter
Highway1, which utilises the VACS (Vortex actuated cell sorting) technology, is a fluorescence-based sterile cell sorter that is GMP compatible. It has been designed to enable fast yet gentle sorting in a sterile and intuitive manner....

  • The Highway1 combines traditional fluorescence cell identification with proprietary VACSTM (Vortex Actuated Cell Sorting), enabling fast, gentle, scalable microfluidic cell sorting. For the invention of VACSTM, we were awarded the 2020 Lee Lucas Award by the Institute of Physics. This combination results in the Highway1 being the fastest of all sterile gentle cell sorters.

    Highway1 product features

    42 kHz  equivalent droplet rate

Cell throughput rates: 10,000/s in purity mode, 37,000/s in enrichment mode

Sterile, single use cartridges (RUO and GMP)

    No sheath fluid, no aerosols

    488 & 640 nm lasers

6 parameters: FSC, SSC, FITC, PE, PE-Cy5/PerCP, APC

  • Highway1 Sterile Sorting Cartridge
A sterile closed cartridge, with RUO and GMP versions. The RUO version comes with a sterile cartridge loader (syringe with 30 micron in-line strainer and flexible tube for drawing a sample)....

  • The sterile cartridge system for the Highway1 comes consists of two parts: the cartridge (with chip and output vessels) and cartridge loader syringe. There is a magnetic stirrer inside the syringe for keeping cells suspended.

The sample flows to two outputs Sort1 (deflected) and Sort0 (undeflected). There is no sheath or waste – there is no waste stream to lose cells. Further 3-mL input syringes, additional in-line strainers, blunt syringe needles, and accessories for sample refrigeration are available.

The cartridge is easily handled with aseptic techniques inside a biosafety hood.
