Chair, 2013 Scientific Program Committee

On behalf of President, Monica Morrow, MD, the Executive Council, and the Scientific Program Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the 66th Annual Cancer Symposium of the Society of Surgical Oncology, March 6-9, 2013, at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center, National Harbor, MD.

The 2013 Annual Program offerings include both disease specific symposia as well as symposia with broad interest such as, Building Multidisciplinary Cancer Care and Participating in Clinical Trials in the Community Cancer Center, and The Role of Surgeons in Cooperative Group Studies. We are also bringing back popular sessions, such as Meet the Professor breakfasts and the Great Debates, with a new twist. This year the Meet the Professor sessions will include opportunities for members to stump the experts with their most challenging case presentations in HPB, CRC and breast cancer and the Great Debates will feature 3 provocative and controversial debates all delivered by Past Presidents of the SSO!

New innovations for the 2013 meeting include sessions focusing on, The Challenges of Surgical Decision Making in the Era of Personalized Medicine and How to Harness Social Media and the Web in Your Practice. We are also very excited to present a joint international program featuring experts from the SSO and the Japanese Society of Gastrointestinal Surgeons, focused on Updates and Controversies in Gastric Cancer.

Additional highlights at the 2013 meeting include the Education Session, The Surgical Oncology Workforce of the Future, which will provide an update on Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program Accreditation, the requirements for Board Certification in Complex General Surgical Oncology, and Maintenance of Certification. The Komen Symposium will provide a comprehensive look at the role of MRI in Breast Cancer: Where Are We Now? And we have also brought back the Video Sessions! Members and guests have submitted videos illustrating novel and cutting edge procedures and techniques and the top rated videos will be presented at this year’s meeting.

We encourage you to arrive early to attend the Wednesday Dinner Symposium, Demystifying Margins in Breast Conserving Surgery, an in-depth examination of the issue of margins from the perspective of both the surgeon and the pathologist.  We will also offer a full-day pre-meeting course on Wednesday entitled Advances and Updates in Clinical Surgical Oncology. This session will incorporate both the latest translational research findings and pearls for clinical practice, and is designed to benefit all members of the Society with an emphasis on practical information for community-based general surgical oncologists.

We hope that you will join us on Thursday evening in the exhibit hall for the Welcome Reception and on Saturday evening for The Presidents Reception.  Both evenings will provide opportunities for networking and re-connecting with old friends and colleagues in a relaxed setting.

We look forward to seeing you in National Harbor, MD for a great meeting.
