Profile

Safe Label System ensures safe, TJC-compliant syringe labeling in perioperative settings and meets ISMP Guidelines to prevent medication errors. It uses visual and audible confirmations acting as a second set of eyes during syringe preparation and integrates with anesthesia drug carts to improve inventory control and labeling compliance, printing a full-color, easy-to-read, ready-to-apply syringe label on demand that integrates with Epic/Cerner for ‘hands-free’ documentation of the exact NDC, improving charge capture & 340B accountability at administration. Stop by and learn how the label further integrates with interoperable syringe pumps to reduce manual clicks and helps detect and deter drug diversion with narcotic waste verification and testing in < 4 secs.

Safe Label System improves OR safety, pharmacy profitability & anesthesia workflow by electronically verifying medications using barcode technology during syringe preparation. It integrates with anesthesia carts (BD/Omnicell) to deliver accurate inventory control, helping reduce stock outs. Using visual & audible safety checks, it reduces vial/ampoule swaps during medication preparation & prints a TJC-compliant syringe label on demand.

  • Cleveland, Ohio – MAY 1, 2024 – CODONICS®, a globally recognized leader in medical solutions and patient safety devices, unveils the latest advancement in medication safety with the introduction of the Safe Label System SLS 600i®. This next-generation model, now equipped with 'future proof technology', is set to redefine patient safety and clinician efficiency across the continuum of care.

The SLS 600i offers hospitals an unprecedented level of versatility, including an upgrade path for RFID integration, ensuring that healthcare facilities remain at the forefront of technology. Building upon the success of its predecessor, the SLS 550i, the SLS 600i comes pre-wired, making it upgradable in the future for read/write RFID capabilities. Additionally, it reads medication container barcodes including compliant GS1 DataMatrix and can provide crucial medication data to Epic, Cerner, and other AIMS/EHR systems for enhanced track and trace capabilities.

Key features of the SLS 600i include:

    • Enhanced safety capabilities with track and trace functionality, including expiration date and lot number
    • Support for GS1 DataMatrix and 1D barcodes in addition to RFID
    • High-resolution barcode scanner for accurate data capture

The SLS 600i is the result of Codonics' collaboration with industry leaders in the GS1 RFID and Barcode Implementation Program, as well as medication technology companies exploring RFID labels. Moreover, the system aligns with the Institute of Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) recommendations to reduce medication errors, including the elimination of handwritten labels and the inclusion of machine-readable barcodes on all syringe and infusion labels by 2025.

Mike Kolberg, Vice President of Codonics, emphasizes the transformative potential of RFID technology in healthcare, stating, "RFID offers the convenience and capacity to contain critical medication information about that medication, such as lot number, expiration date, and serial number when available for complete track and trace to the patient record. With RFID integration, operational and regulatory efficiencies can be realized, paving the way for enhanced patient safety."

Since its inception, Safe Label System (SLS) has been utilized in over 15,500 operating rooms and installed in more than 1,000 leading hospitals worldwide. With over 64 million procedures and 256 million drug preparations, SLS has played a pivotal role in preventing over 1.9 million medication errors1.
