SSO 2017 Shark Tank Call for Proposals

The SSO 2017 Scientific Program Committee invites you to submit your proposal for a Shark Tank session! This session will take place during the Challenges in Bringing New Technologies to the Operating Room session on March 16 from 4-6 pm, in Seattle.

Call for proposals:

The objective of the SSO Shark Tank Competition is to educate surgeons about the process of innovation by demonstrating the steps necessary to bring an idea through regulatory approval and commercialization. Finalists will enjoy the opportunity to make their pitch directly to interested parties in a public forum during SSO 2017. Finalists will benefit from free access to the advice and experience of our panelists.

Eligibility: Anyone with an idea for a device, technology, application, and/or business related to surgery and/or cancer is eligible.  Small companies with capitalization and/or revenues in excess of $100,000 outside of grant funding are ineligible.

Application instructions: Applicants must submit a two-page abstract describing the problem, the proposed solution, market opportunity, competition, competitive advantage (including team members) and business model.

Timeline:

  • Applications open October 2016.
  • Deadline for submission is Friday, December 2, 2016.  Your submission must be emailed to beckywilliams@surgonc.org by this deadline for consideration.
  • Finalists will be notified in early January 2017.
  • Finalists must submit a five-page executive summary online by March 1, 2017.
  • During the session, an eight-minute presentation (with or without PowerPoint) is expected with a 10 minute Q&A session to follow. The winner will be announced at the session.

General Rules:

Attendance: Finalists must agree to present their technology and business plan at the competition on Thursday, March 16, 2017 in Seattle, Washington from 4-6 pm. All finalists must register for and pay the fee to attend SSO 2017.

Non-confidentiality: All portions of the competition, including but not limited to oral presentations and question/answer sessions, are open to the public at large. Any and all of these sessions may be broadcast to interested persons through media which may include radio, television and the Internet. Any data or information discussed or divulged in public sessions by entrants should be considered information that could possibly enter the public realm, and entrants should not assume any right of confidentiality in any data or information discussed, divulged, or presented in these sessions. Due to the nature of the competition, we are not able to ask judges, reviewers, staff, or the audience to agree to or sign non-disclosure statements. However, the organizers of thisSSO session will make every effort to limit distribution of business plans presented at the competition. The SSO cannot guarantee that other individuals will not obtain access to electronic or hard copies of the business plan. All presentations are open to the general public, and some presentations may be videotaped. Attendance by media personnel is expected. 

Copyrights & Permissions: If a team uses copyrighted materials and/or images from a third-party in their submissions or presentations, they must obtain permission and authorization in advance from the owners to use this material.

Information presented by the Applicant at the SSO Shark Tank Session is the sole responsibility of the Applicant.
