    Figure 01. UCP’s u-Cups Product Lineu-CupTM—Round (I), Mini (II), Cone (III), Flat (IV) and Key-cup (V)

u-CupTM drug screen cups are available in five different shapes and sizes—Round (I), Mini (II), Cone (III), Flat (IV) and Key-cup (V) (Please see Figure 01). The shapes and sizes of these cups are strategically designed and constantly changing to keep up with the fast pace of industry’s demands and consumer’s needs. Among them the round cups (I) are the classical one and most commonly utilized drug screen, while mini-cups (II) are smaller in size, yet round shaped and lighter weight. Which provide consumers with a cost-effective option due to lower shipping and waste disposal expenses. Subsequently, cone-shape cups (III) have wider opening and narrow bottom for convenient sample collection, while flat-cups (IV) are designed with a flat front to make photocopying of the test results possible for documentation purposes. Similarly, key-cups (V) are flat front split specimen cups as it is required by some states that presumptive and lab testing samples must be stored and shipped in separate compartments. UCP’s u platform represents drug screens that are CLIA waived, 510K cleared, FDA approved and manufactured in FDA inspected and ISO 13485 certified facilities.

UCP Biosciences, Inc. is a subsidiary of Chinese Peptide Group of Companies (CPC Group) a world’s leading innovator and manufacturer of high-tech qualitative and quantitative In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) digital devices. These devices are designed at UCP’s state of the art FDA inspected and ISO 13485 certified manufacturing facilities in Hangzhou, China. Among its top notch digital devices are a Drug of Abuse (DOA) Test Cup Reader (u-ReaderTMforensic use only) and a newly developed, soon to be released, quantitative immunofluorescence assay scanner called the Prometheus SOLOTM.

The u-ReaderTM is a completely automated device and digitized solution to drug test reporting, verification and documentation. It is engineered with cutting edge wavelength matching technology to intensify faint—hard to read—test lines. And the optical imaging technology to produce high quality digital reports providing convenient readability and non-human reliance on the judgement and subjectivity of the test results. Once a drug test is performed using u-CupTM in accordance to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) guidelines, it is placed inside the u-ReaderTM, which then automatically detects the number of drug panels, device type and scans test cup to generate digital PDF reports in just thirty seconds. The u-ReaderTM is fully equipped with on-station data storage and multiple exportation options including USB drive and PC link as .csv or .pdf formats.

Also, on the horizon, is a high-performance quantitative immunofluorescence assay scanner (Prometheus SOLOTM). This device is engineered to scan biomarker cassettes via concentration dependent fluorescence emission technology and performs a quantitative analysis using in-house proprietary calibration algorithms.

UCP Biosciences, Inc. continues to focus on emerging new technologies and innovations to design and manufacture next generation digital devices and welcomes contract manufacturing opportunities with fully customizable options, potential co-development projects and beyond.

  • Silicon Valley, 5th Day of October, 2018

On a normal day in the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) facilities—Hospitals, Physician’s offices, Addiction & Treatment Centers, and Employment & Government Agencies—Immunoassay based drug tests are first performed with a presumptive Urine Drug Test Cup. The preliminary test results are then analyzed and sent to the Toxicology Laboratory for confirmation testing via analytical instruments such as Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) or Tandem Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). While this classic duo procedure has been the standard in the Drug-of-Abuse (DOA) industry since many decades, it is not without problems. To name a few, unsanitary handling due to greater risk of specimen leakage, higher cost of sample storage, transportation, and tardy transfer procedures using inefficient tools such as collection cup, pipette and POCT cup.

To solve these problems we have designed a clever accessory—u-VacuLidTM—an innovative vacuum-based sample transfer system that provides cost-effective, efficient, convenient and reliable solutions. It offers an efficient sample collection procedure that utilizes vacutainers (vacuum sealed sample collection tubes) and a u-CupTM (POCT Cup) to make sample transfer fast, leak-resistant, and convenient. The compact size of the Vacutainers allow long term and economical solutions in high volume test settings by mitigating overall workload, storage, disposal, shipping and related expenses. In addition, it eliminates biological contact due to its leak-proof mechanism and maintains a disease free environment. u-VacuLidTM is a groundbreaking solution that is quickly exceeding Drug of Abuse industry’s standards and setting new records.

  • FALL 2018 UCP Biosciences

Over the past few decades, Point of Care (POC) urine based presumptive drug testing has been the primary choice for drug testing professionals—forensic or compliance—such as law enforcement officers, public health practitioners and toxicology Researchers. While urine testing has grown into a billion-dollar industry due to the rise of opioid epidemic, there are better, economical and environmentally friendly alternatives available such as saliva testing (J Anal Toxicol. 40(7), 2016, 479–485). The focus of this short article is to shine light on some unique yet significant advantages of oral fluid drug (OFD) testing over other regularly practiced methods such as urine. OFD testing offers significant benefits, among them 1) high sensitivity, 2) low cost, 3) noninvasive collection are the most advantageous reasons oral collection is becoming the “go-to” method for the drug testing industry.
