  • Process up to 4 mL volume with recovery of fragments as short as 50 bp

    Norcross, Georgia — July 25, 2018 — Omega Bio-tek announces the extended capabilities of the Mag-Bind® cfDNA kit (M3298), enabling scientists to process 1 to 8 mL samples and to obtain cfDNA fragments as short as 50 bp in a high throughput workflow. The automated solution is capable of extracting cfDNA from 48 samples of 8 mL cell-free fluid sample in 2.5 hours when integrated on a Hamilton Microlab® STAR™ platform. The automated volume handling and the short fragment recovery capability of the kit surpass the capacity of current industry-leading products, providing more flexibility and increased sensitivity for high-throughput cfDNA analyses.

    Circulating, cell-free DNA, or cfDNA, exists in plasma, serum, and other bodily fluids and offers great potential for non-invasive disease detection and fetal screening. However, cfDNA research is complicated owing to less abundant cfDNA and often requires sample processing from large volumes to obtain sufficient amounts of cfDNA needed for various downstream analyses. cfDNA analysis is further hindered because many purification methods discard DNA fragments smaller than 150 bp. 

    The Mag-Bind® cfDNA kit combines magnetic beads with a unique chemistry that preferably binds cfDNA fragments from larger volumes but also recovers DNA fragments as small as 50 bp. The system supports low elution volumes to purify concentrated cfDNA suitable for a variety of downstream applications such as qPCR, microarrays, next-generation sequencing, etc. 
    “Circulating tumor DNA is typically shorter in length than cfDNA from normal cells and current circulating DNA purification methods are often limited for these applications ”, said Travis Butts, Business Director of Omega Bio-tek.   • Omega Bio-tek, a biotech company based in Norcross, Georgia, announces the launch of its new product, Mag-Bind® Blood DNA HV Kit, which can extract genomic DNA from large volume blood samples in a fully automated solution. The solution integrates the novel extraction chemistry on the Hamilton Microlab® STAR™ liquid handling platform to provide a high throughput solution for applications such as biorepositories, genomics research, and pharmacogenomics that require substantial amounts of DNA to be extracted from large-volume samples.

    There are several kits and automated workflows on the market that can process blood samples with volumes in the range of 100-250µL but not many options exist for volumes as high as 10mL. With Omega Bio-tek’s new automated workflow, twenty-four 10 mL blood samples can be processed in 2.5 hours without compromising on DNA yield and quality.

    “The attractive feature of this workflow is its scalability that it can work from volumes as little as 250 µL to 10 mL with the same hardware configuration and no additional expensive accessories on the Hamilton platform,” said Travis Butts, Business Director of Omega Bio-tek. “With the growing landscape of biobanks, personalized medicine and genetics research, there is an immense market need for automated and reliable solutions to extract DNA for large sample volumes while keeping costs at a reasonable level.”

    The robust performance of this automated workflow ensures high molecular weight DNA extraction making it attractive for third generation sequencing technologies such as those produced by Pacific Biosciences and Oxford Nanopore that requires longer single molecule DNA fragments.
