Mark Martens, MD

Mark G. Martens, MD, FACOG is Vice President, Academic Affairs/Chief Academic Officer, Tower Health since March 2018.  Recently, he was Chair of the Department of OB/GYN at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Clinical Professor and Vice-Chair at Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine in New Jersey, and was the Founding Chair and Professor of OB/GYN at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall, Nutley, New Jersey. Dr. Martens was tenured Professor of OB/GYN and Vice-Chair for Research at the University of Oklahoma. He has published over 150 peer-review articles, book chapters, and is a reviewer or editorial board member of several peer review journals.  He has been an educator, researcher, and clinician in the areas of Infectious Diseases in Women, Menopause, Osteoporosis, and Minimally Invasive Surgery for over 25 years. Dr. Martens is the past President of the International Infectious Disease Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology. He graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio and attended graduate school in microbiology at Northwestern University in Chicago.  He attended George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency in OB/GYN at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, and a Fellowship in OB/GYN Infectious Diseases at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.


“The Impact of COVID-19 on Pregnancy and the Management of Infected Patients”

This seminar will aid physicians and obstetrical staff in providing care in the antepartum and intrapartum period for women with SARS-CoV-2 infection.  Special focus on the safety of recommended treatments, accuracy and interpretation of testing, and personal protection recommendations in pregnancy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Assess and counsel women and families on the impact of coronavirus infection on the course of pregnancy.  The most current data on miscarriage and adverse pregnancy outcomes will be described.
  • List and interpret testing protocols for both patients and obstetrical staff. Testing protocols will be described and supporting data reviewed to aid the practitioner in guiding the patient.
  • Conduct intrapartum management of a patient with SARS CoV-2 in labor.  Federal and Society guidelines regarding treatment options, personal protection strategies, and maternal separation will be reviewed.
