The Long Term Ecological Research Network links 28 National Science Foundation-funded ecological research programs and over 2000 researchers working in every major U.S. biome. Established in 1980, the LTER Network employs long term observation, experimentation, and modeling to address fundamental questions about how ecosystems work. The sustained involvement of large teams of active scientists has also delivered substantial and ongoing engagement with resource managers, policymakers, educators, and public audiences — making the LTER a key resource for evidence-based environmental policy and knowledge at all levels.
