The mission of the NSO is to advance knowledge of the Sun both as an astronomical object, and as the dominant external influence on Earth. NSO operates cutting edge, ground-based solar telescopes across the world. The NSO currently leads two cutting-edge observing programs: NISP has provided long-term synoptic observations of the Sun for more than 30 years, and DKIST will be the largest solar telescope in the world, acting like a microscope for the Sun and its magnetic field.
