The 12 academic, specialty, and community hospitals of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) dot the map of the state's eastern half, on both sides of Chesapeake Bay. UMMS, one of the largest employers in the Baltimore area, has more than 2,300 acute care beds and attends to such specialties as trauma care, coma emergence, kidney transplants, orthopedic rehabilitation, stroke intervention, and pediatric care. University of Maryland Medical Center, the system's teaching hub, is one of the oldest academic hospitals in the US. In addition to its hospitals, UMMS also includes community clinics to address mental health, rehabilitation, and primary care. The system was established in 1984.
