  • Perth, Western Australia, 21 February 2017 – In May 2016 Barrett Communications supplied the Rainbow Radio League, a not for profit organisation in St Vincent and the Grenadines, with high frequency (HF) and very high frequency (VHF) radio communications equipment. Since this time they have been working to install the donated equipment at key locations among the country’s islands.

    A unique project has recently developed with the aim to engage with the local high school students teaching them about the use of HF radio in an emergency and also as a hobby. Two schools, the JP Eustace Memorial Secondary School, (formerly Emmanuel High School – Kingstown) and Emmanuel High School – Mespo took part in this historic event. Mr Donald De Riggs, Director of Rainbow Radio League commented; “This was the first time that secondary schools here were involved in a wireless radio link up facilitated by the Rainbow Radio League Inc.”

    At both schools Rainbow Radio League volunteers outlined the role of amateur radio as a service during times of national emergency. Mr Philip Greaves, Principal at Emmanuel High School – Mespo was involved with an actual demonstration using the Barrett 2090 manpack chatting with staff at JP Eustace Memorial Secondary School- Kingstown on the Barrett 2050 base station. Students were also involved with erecting the rapid deployment antenna as well as participating in the wireless ‘link-up’ between the two schools. The Rainbow Radio League Inc., is a non-profit, community service organisation with a special emphasis on emergency communications. The RRL Inc. operates VHF and HF wireless communications network in St Vincent and the Grenadines. For an island country that is within the identified “Hurricane belt” and lies on an active subduction zone, it is vital that this organisation and its volunteering members maintain the skills and interest in amateur radio. Mr De Riggs went on to say “It is anticipated that this will be an annual event, to eventually include all secondary schools.

    Ham radio promotes goodwill and friendship among people, irrespective of nationality or race worldwide. In times of national emergency amateur radio is the main and, in most cases, the only means to communicate from the affected areas.”

  • Perth, Western Australia, 18 April 2017 – Barrett Communications have provided portable HF radio communications equipment to the West Midlands Fire Services (WMFS) for their specialist search and rescue team when responding to international emergencies. 

    The WMFS Service is the second largest fire service within the United Kingdom and are responsible for the coordination of communications element of UK International Search and Rescue (UKISAR).

    In larger emergencies, voice communication to and from outside the impact area is critical. In identifying the need to further strengthen their communications with High Frequency (HF) capability, WMFS contacted Barrett Communications about the Barrett 2050 Rapid Field Deployment System (RFDS) and other portable HF systems to provide their team with communications in these emergency environments. HF radio communications is often used by first responders to natural or man-made disasters where normal communications infrastructure has either been destroyed or disabled in the disaster. With the exception of the initial capital cost, HF systems are infrastructure independent and free to air with no ongoing call costs.

    The WMFS are part of the larger International Search and Rescue Team (ISAR), a group known for their global response to natural and man-made disasters and are often called upon by governments in extreme situations. As part of their ongoing training, WMFS were recently involved in the Modex Exercise 2 in Falck Denmark – Langvang, where the exercise scenario was a major earthquake with numerous powerful aftershocks which had devastated the region of Langvang and the busy town of Falck. The exercise took place over 4 days in below 0°C conditions.

    The Barrett RFDS was deployed as part of the UK communications system and provided communication back to the response headquarters in Falck. Two of the WMFS rescue specialists wore the Barrett 2090 HF manpacks which allowed them to provide minute by minute updates on the rescue situation.

    Mike Teale, Communications Engineer with the WMFS commented “The RFDS was deployed and operational within minutes, which is so critical in emergency situations like this, and provided reliable communications throughout the entire exercise. This additional capability of HF radio communications has strengthened the rescue service that WMFS provide”

  • In Peru, a country regularly effected by severe flooding, landslides and other natural disasters, a community of likeminded four wheel drive enthusiasts, with a heart to serve those impacted by natural disasters, have come together to support aid agency efforts in remote regions throughout the country.

    The founder of Unidad 4×4, a registered nonprofit organisation, Mr. Aníbal Paredes, said they based their organisation on the British organisation 4×4 Response. Mr Paredes went on to say “We are not a search and rescue, health care or first aid organization, but we work with these organizations when they need external local logistical support. Our purpose is to provide humanitarian aid to people in emergency situations affected by phenomena of nature, our attention focuses particularly in remote areas and areas difficult to access due to terrain, where 4×4 vehicles can get to.”

    Immediately following a natural disaster, communication is vital to understand the situation and to assess the best way forward. With previous personal experience as a volunteer member of the Defensa Civil organization rescue squad, Mr Paredes recognised this need and also understood that High Frequency (HF) radio communications is often the only viable mode of communication following a natural disaster, as it does not rely on infrastructure such as telephone towers or mains powers to maintain communication.

    At a flea market organised by a local ham radio club, Mr Paredes found a Barrett 2050 HF transceiver and negotiated a good price. On taking it home and powering it up, it was found that there were some issues preventing it from operating as expected. On contacting the Technical Support Team at Barrett Communications in Perth, Western Australia they were able to update the latest firmware version and the Barrett 2050 HF transceiver is now fully operational.

    On hearing of Unidad 4×4 and what they are achieving, Barrett Communications initially donated an ex-demonstration Barrett 2019 antenna and additional accessories to upgrade the vehicle installation into Mr Paredes Land Rover. More recently further needs have been identified and Barrett is working to supply a permanent base station and other ex-demonstration communication equipment and accessories to allow Unidad 4×4 to expand the work they are already doing.

    Mr Greg O’Neill, Managing Director of Barrett Communications commented “Unidad 4×4 is providing support to these aid organisations and assisting many small communities in regional Peru, we are pleased we can donate our ex-demonstration equipment and assist them in making an impact in the lives of people who, in many cases, have lost everything.”

    Barrett Communications work with many critical infrastructure organisations, including airports, health services, power and oil and gas distributors throughout the world to develop emergency communications systems to maintain voice, email, fax and text communication during and following manmade and natural disasters.

  • NVIS Communications, the Barrett Communications system integrator in the United States, together with REDCOM Labs and Star Solutions provided High Frequency (HF), LTE, satellite and mobile phone connectivity over the 120 mile Baker to Vegas law enforcement officer foot race. The 2017 event also required a Doctors Radio Network in addition to the existing Medical Radio Network and event management networks.

    The Baker to Vegas organizers and medical staff determined that a separate Doctors Network was needed to provide direct communications from each of the stations in the race, back to a command post that also had direct connectivity to a Southern Californian hospital for any specialist advice or counsel, in the event of a medical emergency during the relay race.

    The CrucialConnect® Tactical Communications Unit (TCU) developed in collaboration with NVIS Communications, REDCOM Labs and Barrett was deployed at a strategic location in California and was able to provide primary, emergency or backup communications via a multitude of mediums and modes.

    Due to communications issues early in the race the CrucialConnect® TCU provided the primary communications network for the entire race, until the normal operations had been rectified. It then continued to operate in the background providing full connectivity for the Doctors Radio Network throughout the event.

    The Medical Radio and Doctors Radio Network Director, Mr Peter Benjamins commented “NVIS Communications and its partners provided the whole communications backbone for this year’s race and saved the day on Saturday when our own system was inoperable”.

    The CrucialConnect® TCU was deployed and setup in under one hour at a strategic high location off road in the Mojave Desert Wilderness area overlooking the first half of the race course from Baker California to Pahrump Nevada. From this location the TCU was able to acquire both Terrestrial (via Verizon LTE) and also from Satellite (GlobalStar/Inmarsat) SIP trunks that were then distributed to the secure race networks.

    John Rosica, President of NVIS Communications went on to say, “We achieved this great result with a number of different systems integrated together. The direct SIP access was achieved via either VoIP or Analog Telephones that were laid down at the CrucialConnect® TCU, for local command and control. VHF and UHF Repeaters were deployed with wide area coverage over the whole route from Baker to Pahrump Nevada. HF automated direct dial inward and outward to and from anywhere over the course and out to over 400 miles to blanket any location outside of VHF/UHF range, and finally additional local coverage via MicroCellular Band 14 base station for FirstNet operators with a 12km diameter range.”
    All users regardless of what radio platform they were on (VHF/UHF/HF) were able to acquire a dial-tone directly from the CrucialConnect® TCU and connect to anyone outside the race area. Further, anyone calling into the CrucialConnect® TCU from outside the course could have automated direct access to any or all of the radio platforms via a number of preconfigured conference bridges that they could access via telephone whether cellular, analog or VoIP.

    Additionally, a complete HF system utilising Barrett Communications HF Voice and Data was in place at multiple fixed and mobile locations throughout the course and beyond so that in the event that other mediums were down or unavailable, the HF system would be able to provide direct connectivity to and from the race locations to external automated HF telephone interconnects in the greater Southern California or even surrounding States through the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

    Mr Rosica went on to say “The CrucialConnect® Tactical Communications Unit (TCU) does not rely upon any manual intervention to complete voice, data or email connection, as it is fully automated. This system provides HF voice, data or email to be transmitted through the PSTN to emergency response services anywhere in the USA, from an area with no PSTN or infrastructure to support voice or email communications. We see many emergency management agencies understanding the unique solution this system offers. We were pleased to provide the equipment and service for this year’s event and look forward to continued service to the Baker to Vegas event in the years ahead.”
