Out of the ~20,000 genes in the human genome, ~4,000 are considered druggable; however, only 5-10% of these proteins are targeted by FDA approved drugs. To improve our understanding of understudied members of the commonly druggable ion channel, GPCR, and kinase families, the NIH Common Fund launched the Illuminating the Druggable Genome (IDG) Program with the goal of catalyzing research in areas of biology that are currently understudied but that have high potential to impact human health.
