The Esophageal Doppler Monitor (EDM+) a minimally invasive technology used to hemodynamically optimize patients in surgery or intensive care. CMS provide coverage for EDM and agreed it is reasonable and necessary for “Monitoring cardiac output for ventilated patients in ICU” and for “Patients needing intraoperative fluid optimization”.
CMS decision is based on strong clinical evidence for EDM including a technology assessment from AHRQ.
EDM is a core element of Enhanced Recovery Protocols, clinically proven to reduce post-op complications, readmission and re-operation rates, hospital length of stay and reduces costs significantly.
