Militia officers nationwide created the Association in 1878 to provide a strong, unified voice on Capitol Hill. Its goal was to obtain better equipment and training by petitioning Congress for adequate resources. Today, 144 years later, with a membership of nearly 45,000 current and retired National Guard officers, the National Guard Association of the United States has the same mission.
