See You in Boston!

Boston is an extraordinary destination, where the richness of American history is complemented by the vibrancy of a modern, innovative city. Boston’s arts, theatre and cultural attractions, distinctive dining, world-class shopping and championship sports teams attract millions of visitors each year.

First incorporated as a town in 1630, and as a city in 1822, Boston is one of America's oldest cities, with a rich economic and social history. What began as a homesteading community eventually evolved into a center for social and political change. Boston has since become the economic and cultural hub of New England. It is also considered an international center for medicine and higher learning.

Historic Boston, Modern Medicine

Boston is a mecca of medicine, home to some of the most prestigious hospitals and medical schools, physicians and medical scientists in the world. Since the momentous day in 1846 when William Morton, a local dentist, for the first time publicly demonstrated the use of inhaled ether as a surgical anesthetic in Massachusetts General Hospital’s now-famous Ether Dome, the city has seen many medical firsts, including the first fertilization of an ovum in a test tube and the first successful human-organ transplant. Today it ranks as a preeminent center for healthcare and research.

A Destination City

The City of Boston hosts over 12 million annual visitors from across the country and around the globe. This vibrant, thriving city is renowned for its cultural facilities, world-class educational institutions, champion sports franchises, as well as its place at the very forefront of American history. Tourism is one of New England's largest industries; as the region's social and commercial "hub," Boston thrives on accommodating and entertaining visitors as few other cities can.
