Why did you decide to postpone the meeting instead of cancelling it?
As healthcare organizations are actively managing the response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), we fully recognize the need for attendees and faculty to remain at their institutions to fulfill patient care responsibilities. This obligation, along with SSO’s focus on the health and safety of attendees, has led to the postponement decision. The decision was carefully weighed by the SSO Executive Council, which recognizes the significant time and effort that has been dedicated to writing abstracts, preparing presentations and making travel plans. Providing an opportunity for the surgical oncology community to come together to learn about new research and hot topics, discuss collaborations and see old friends were key factors in the decision to postpone instead of cancel the event.
Why were the August 17 – 20, 2020 rescheduled dates selected?
Contractual obligations as well as an effort to minimize financial impact to the Society resulted in the decision to keep the event at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. As you may know, Boston is a very popular venue and these dates were the most feasible given the availability of the convention center, hotels and in consideration of the timing of other SSO programs and events. We recognize the challenges with the August 17 – 20date and know that it may not be ideal for everyone. Extremely limited venue options along with anticipating when the virus may be contained led to selection of this timing.
With your help, we plan to transform this setback into a win and hold the best SSO meeting ever. Summertime is beautiful in Boston, and we encourage you to bring your family to experience all that this region has to offer – from 400 years of history to the beauty and serenity of Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. We hope that you will join us in Boston this summer to experience outstanding education, the highly anticipated SSO HUB and the collegial gathering of the global surgical oncology community!
Do I have to re-register for the August 17 – 20, 2020 dates?
For your convenience, your SSO 2020 March registration will be automatically transferred to the August dates. You will receive a new registration confirmation by March 13, 2020. If you have any questions about your registration, please contact SSOregistration@spargoinc.com.
Do I need to contact my hotel to change the dates of my stay?
If your housing reservation was made through the SSO 2020 website, you do not need to contact the hotel. Your length of stay will be automatically transferred to the August dates. You will receive a new housing confirmation by March 13, 2020. Changes and cancellations can be made online until Thursday, July 23, 2020, 5:00 pm EST. If you booked your hotel directly, you will need to contact the hotel to adjust the dates of your stay. If you have questions or need to modify your reservation, please contact SSOhousing@spargoinc.com.
Will the original program schedule remain intact?
At this time, SSO plans to keep the exact program schedule, including the pre-meeting courses. However, the program schedule is dependent on Faculty availability and therefore subject to change. If changes to the program schedule are necessary, they will be updated by Mid-May.
Will a virtual meeting be available?
Yes, the SSO 2020 Virtual Meeting will be available to meeting attendees for a fee of $25 if purchased at the time of registration or during the meeting. The Virtual Meeting will be available to non-meeting attendees on August 28, 2020 at the full rate.
Will any sessions be available via live stream?
At this time live streaming of meeting sessions will not be available.
What is the refund policy?
If you are unable to attend SSO 2020 in August, you may cancel your registration online by using this link: https://show.jspargo.com/sso20/login.aspx
All registration cancellations and refunds will be processed in the same manner as original payment: if paid by credit card the refund will be issued to the card on record, generally within 5-7 business days of the request. Payments made by check will be refunded as a check within 45 days of the close of the meeting. Cancellations made by April 15, 2020 will be refunded in full. Cancellations received after April 15, 2020 will be assessed a $75 cancellation fee. No refunds will be issued after July 31, 2020.
Are there other ways that I can obtain CME from SSO prior to the August meeting?
Yes. SSO offers SSO members free access to a variety of CME activities including webinars and Annals of Surgical Oncology journal articles. Non-members may also utilize these resources for a minimal fee. Please login using your SSO account credentials at www.surgonc.org/experted.
