  • With “SYIONS”, Jenoptik is broadening its extensive expertise in diagnostics and analytics solutions to include a digital image capture, processing and analysis platform that can be configured to the customer’s specific needs. Premiere at SPIE BiOS and SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco.

    Medical technology and diagnostics

Jenoptik’s new solution “SYIONS”, a miniaturized modular diagnostic imaging platform, allows users to quickly and efficiently generate all types of image data from in-vitro diagnostics devices for use in scientific and clinical settings. SYIONS enables the quick and cost-effective implementation of applications in the areas of live cell imaging, flow cytometry and molecular diagnostics.

The modular system solution combines proven Jenoptik modules such as LED illumination, optical elements, digital cameras and auto-focus, as well as X/Y scanners, electronics, and software, to enable efficient imaging solutions that provide the user with images of the highest quality and ensure easy integration into the software system environment of medical or laboratory devices. Moreover, with Jenoptik’s own modular software, work processes and more can be performed consistently and efficiently across various operating systems. For instance, with the help of Jenoptik’s SYIONS platform, the examination of cells or tissue samples can be automated quickly and reliably. Devices are decreasing in size while, at the same time, performance data is improving and reliability is increasing. Due to the standardization of the individual modules, these devices can now be produced cost-effective in smaller production runs.

Modular platform for digital image capture, processing and analysis

Wolfgang Keller, Head of the Healthcare & Industry division at Jenoptik, sums up the benefits of the new imaging platform: “SYIONS is made up of various established Jenoptik technologies, which we have combined to create a complete custom solution that is tailored to the individual needs of our clients, including their system requirements and application needs. This complete system is significantly smaller than conventional microscopes and imaging systems, meaning it can be quickly and easily integrated into our clients’ laboratory equipment, whether existing or yet to be developed. With SYIONS not only can our clients rely on the dependability and stability of the individual technology components, but also on our many years of experience manufacturing them to Jenoptik’s proven quality standards.”

  • JENOPTIK Optical Systems, LLC collaborated with Google on microscopy technology to assist pathologists in detecting cancer with deep learning

JENOPTIK Optical Systems, LLC, a global leader in Optical Systems announced today that they have developed an innovative technology to bring AI to conventional microscopy through overlay of digital content directly into a commercial-off-the-shelf microscope’s field of view, in collaboration with Google researchers. Google has demonstrated modeling for tumor detection in histopathology slides for both prostate cancer and lymph nodes from breast cancer using the platform and presented their results at the Annual meeting for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in April of 2018.

Jenoptik designed and integrated the opto-mechanical technology at its Jupiter, Florida location, which was made possible by leveraging their Systems Engineering experience, optical R&D capabilities, and their portfolio of IP across a breadth of innovative applications and industries. The augmented microscope solution benefitted from their optical design expertise and a digital imaging platform Jenoptik developed over the past decade.

Jay Kumler, President of Jenoptik Optical Systems in North America, commented, "Our work with Google demonstrates our continued commitment to meeting our customers’ expectations of advancing innovations in different technologies.”

Leading equipment manufacturers around the globe rely on Jenoptik’s expertise to build and test digital projection, telecommunications equipment, semiconductor devices, mobile devices, augmented reality, industrial automation, and connected vehicles.
