 Press Releases

  • Carlsbad, CA, 7/25/22 – Argonaut Manufacturing Services (‘Argonaut’), a contract manufacturing organization (CMO) serving the biopharma, life sciences, and molecular diagnostics industries, today announced the launch of BioFuseTM* Sample Prep device. BioFuse is a disposable cartridge solution that enables seamless integration of lyophilized reagents, sample filtration, and removal of pipetting steps to greatly simplify complex assay workflows. BioFuse requires no electricity or instrumentation and requires simple processing steps: addition of sample (e.g., swab stored in VTM or Lysis buffer) to a mixing tube, placement of the BioFuse cap onto the mixing tube, invert by hand to dissolve the lyophilized reagent(s), snapping open the dose-specific dispensing nozzle, and squeezing to load the BioFuse assay contents to an instrument or device (e.g., POCT, OTC, qPCR, lateral flow strip).

“BioFuse is a tremendous advancement toward POCT assay simplification,” stated Wayne Woodard, CEO of Argonaut. “Diagnostic developers will be pleased with the ability to customize BioFuse to their assay parameters, instrument manufacturers will appreciate not only simplifying their device but also opening their platforms to more assays, and of course end-users will find the simplicity of the device refreshing as opposed to the ever-more complex tests they usually face.”

BioFuse components are modular and can be customized in multiple configurations according to dosing requirements, filtering, fill volumes of diluent, and lyophilized reagents. BioFuse supports key molecular assays including PCR, isothermal amplification, lateral flow, and colorimetric tests.

“BioFuse is an Argonaut enabling technology, leveraging our expertise in lyophilization and assay workflow simplification,” said Mark Nowakowski, CTO of Argonaut. “As a result, our clients are able to offer their products in the POCT and OTC markets.”

Woodard concluded with, “This demonstrates Argonaut’s commitment to enabling client innovations by providing more service and solution options from your contract manufacturing partner. We look forward to sharing this innovative solution with Argonaut clients.”

  • Argonaut Manufacturing Services Launches LyoDots- World’s Smallest Lyophilized Reagents

Carlsbad, CA, 7/26/22 – Argonaut Manufacturing Services (‘Argonaut’), a contract manufacturing organization (CMO) serving the biopharma, life sciences, and molecular diagnostics industries, today announced the launch of LyoDots,*TM the world’s smallest lyophilized reagents. LyoDots are customizable and each dot can be attached to an adherent surface that greatly simplifies the automation of lyophilized material in assay cartridges point-of-care-testing (POCT). The proprietary adherent surface on a LyoDot ensures the lyophilized reagents maintain positional correctness and physical stability while allowing the formulated reagents to be produced to <2ul.

LyoDots allow assay developers and manufacturers to reduce cartridge or instrument footprint, lower consumable costs and simplify microfluidics, allowing greater miniaturization.

“We are pleased to announce the launch of LyoDots,” commented Mark Nowakowski, Chief Technology Officer of Argonaut. “LyoDots are our next innovation in lyophilization. Not only can assay developers reduce the amount of required sample and reagent by using smaller reactions, but instrument designers can also significantly shrink cartridges designs. This creates add-on benefits: Reducing the amount of fluid required by the cartridge also lowers the energy required to pump the fluid and decreases the amount of waste stored in the reservoir, while gaining the traditional benefits of lyophilized reagents, all leading to overall lower costs.”

“Point of care testing provides a way to bring accurate and sensitive testing out of centralized laboratories. A challenge we bioengineers work on is to eliminate the need for laboratory “support equipment” while maintaining test sensitivity and specificity,” stated Dr. Paul Yager, University of Washington, Department of Bioengineering. “The LyoDot technology simplifies the work of test developers, and also frees the test itself from cold-chain requirements.  This can be particularly helpful in low-resource settings where laboratory infrastructure and staffing are constrained.”

LyoDots are based on proprietary Argonaut lyophilization technologies and were developed in cooperation with Empirical Bioscience (Fortis Life Sciences).

“Empirical Bioscience and Argonaut have a history of working together to solve customer pain-points,” said Des O’Farrell, President of Empirical Bioscience. “It was great to see Empirical reagents performance on LyoDots and demonstrates the robustness of our chemistries. We look forward to pushing the boundaries of lyophilization technology with Argonaut.”

“Yesterday we announced the launch of BioFuse Sample Prep- a device that simplifies molecular assays,” continued Mark. “With today’s announcement on LyoDots, we continue that story. Argonaut develops not only innovative services but is also now enabling solutions to some of the most complex challenges in the diagnostic market. Helping solve this gives our partners the ability to gain new capabilities, expand markets, and reduce costs.”
