CINCINNATI, OHIO, April 19, 2023 (PRNewswire) – Meridian Bioscience, Inc., a leading global provider of diagnostic testing solutions and life science raw materials, announced today that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had granted clearance for the company’s new Curian® Shiga Toxin assay. This assay joins Curian HpSA® and Curian Campy as Meridian expands its Curian diagnostic platform to maintain leadership in the gastrointestinal disease testing market.

Foodborne illness is a severe global public health problem that causes 48 million people to get sick yearly and 128,000 hospitalizations from common bacterial agents like Campylobacter and E. coli.1 Meridian is expanding its foodborne immunofluorescent testing capabilities beyond Campylobacter by adding Shiga toxin to the Curian platform. Speedy diagnosis is essential with patients suspected of having a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection because the use of antibiotics for treatment can increase Shiga toxin release, leading to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a potentially life-threatening complication.

The Curian Shiga Toxin assay is designed for use with the Curian analyzer. The new assay is a rapid, qualitative, fluorescent immunoassay for the simultaneous detection and differentiation of Shiga toxin 1 (Stx1) and Shiga toxin 2 (Stx2) in a single test device. It is intended for use with cultures derived from human stool specimens to aid in diagnosing diseases caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections, including non-O157 strains.

The immunofluorescent technology of the Curian platform provides an objective, rapid Shiga toxin result with an unmatched clinical sensitivity of 100% (Stx1), 100% (Stx2), and specificity of 99.4% (Stx1), 99.5% (Stx2) in prospective samples.  Curian Shiga Toxin features a lower limit of detection than traditional rapid immunoassay testing. Combined with LIS connectivity, the Curian solution helps to eliminate subjectivity by reducing user variability related to interpreting and reporting visually based lateral flow test results.

“We are excited to continue the expansion of the Curian platform with this highly sensitive and specific assay.  Curian now features the broadest menu of GI tests on an immunoassay analyzer,” said Tony Serafini-Lamanna, President of Meridian Bioscience Diagnostics. “Curian Shiga Toxin has a market-leading three-step sample prep workflow and produces fast, objective results that can help laboratorians and clinicians provide an objective Shiga toxin diagnosis to get patients on the correct treatment and back on the road to wellness.”

  • CINCINNATI, OHIO, July 24, 2023 (PRNewswire) – The Life Science division of Meridian Bioscience, Inc., a leading global provider of diagnostic testing solutions and life science raw materials, announced today the launch of two new immunoassay interference blockers, K-BlockTM, and Mouse-Free IgG. These innovative blockers are 100% animal-free and have equivalent or superior performance compared to traditional animal-derived blockers. This product launch aligns with Meridian’s strategy to pioneer sustainable and innovative raw materials for diagnostic assay manufacturers. By adopting these animal-free products, manufacturers can actively contribute to reducing their ecological impact by optimizing energy and resource consumption and staying compliant with evolving regulatory standards. Meridian continues to lead the way in promoting environmental responsibility within the industry.

Immunoassay interference can cause false positive and false negative test results, leading to misinterpretation and improper patient diagnosis. The most common causes of interference are due to Human Anti-Mouse Antibodies (HAMA), Rheumatoid Factor (RF), and Heterophilic Antibodies (HA).  HAMA are the most prevalent and are identified in up to 25% of the patient population. Combined with HA, they represent the most significant factors leading to false positive immunoassay results. Avoiding immunoassay interference requires blockers to be included in every immunoassay. Historically, animal-based interference blockers have been used to improve assay accuracy; however, they are susceptible to cross-reactivity with assay reagents, lot-to-lot variability, and supply shortages – as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Meridian’s new animal-free immunoassay interference blockers mitigate those concerns.

Meridian’s new K-Block and Mouse-Free IgG overcome the challenges encountered with traditional animal-based blockers. These next-generation blockers improve assay specificity, decrease lot-to-lot variability, align with sustainability considerations, and alleviate contamination risks from animal-derived components. Initial experimental testing in ELISA-based assays demonstrated strong performance of K-Block and Mouse-FREE IgG versus other commercial animal-derived blockers.

“At Meridian, we are deeply committed to supporting our customers who are seeking non-animal-derived raw materials in diagnostic assays.   Our novel 100% animal-free blockers deliver on this commitment while avoiding the need to consume millions of mice each year in the process. This innovative method not only allows us to scale up quickly but also delivers results that are equivalent or even superior in quality. With this new product line, we reaffirm our dedication to environmental sustainability and social responsibility, ensuring a more ethical and responsible approach in our operations as well as our customers.” commented Lourdes Weltzien, Ph.D., President – Life Science, Meridian Bioscience.

  • CINCINNATI, OHIO, July 25, 2023 (PRNewswire) – Meridian Bioscience, Inc., a leading global provider of diagnostic testing solutions and life science raw materials, announced today that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared Premier® HpSA® FLEX™ for the diagnosis of H. pylori in both preserved and unpreserved stools.  Premier HpSA Flex joins the extensive Meridian H. pylori portfolio of products that includes BreathID® (urea breath test for H. pylori), Curian® HpSA (fluorescent immuno analyzer antigen test), and ImmunoCard® Stat! HpSA (rapid colorimetric antigen test).

Meridian strives to continuously improve existing products. The Premier HpSA FLEX workflow improvement recently cleared by FDA allows clinicians to use preserved stools in Cary-Blair and C&S in addition to fresh or frozen unpreserved samples. Meridian’s Premier HpSA FLEX test is a non-invasive enzyme immunoassay used to qualitatively detect Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) specific antigens in fresh, frozen, or preserved human fecal specimens.  Helicobacter pylori infection is linked to several significant upper gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, including chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer.

“Meridian is committed to developing the industry’s broadest range of highly accurate Gastrointestinal diagnostic solutions enabling clinicians to use the sample types and testing platforms required in today’s ever-evolving healthcare landscape,” stated Tony Serafini-Lamanna, President of Meridian Bioscience Diagnostics.  “H. pylori is found in the stomach lining of 1 in 3 people1 and, if left untreated, can lead to gastric cancer.  However, once diagnosed, an H. pylori infection can be easily treated with antibiotics.  That is why we continue to develop highly accurate non-invasive, patient-friendly H. pylori testing methods to help clinicians get patients on the road to wellness as fast and safely as possible.”
