Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD). If left untreated, it can cause serious health problems. SHPT happens when the body produces too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). The increase in PTH leads to imbalances in other hormones and minerals. This often happens along with low levels of vitamin D. Raising vitamin D is key to achieving balance with SHPT.
