Pump interoperability in the OR: safer, accurate and automated.

Safe Label System helps increase safety, ensure compliance & improve electronic documentation. Integrates with anesthesia dispensing carts & barcode-enabled EHRs (Epic, Cerner).  Press Releases

  • BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a leading global medical technology company, and Codonics (www.codonics.com), a global leader of medication management in the perioperative environment, today announced that the companies have signed an agreement for joint design and development of technology aimed to help improve medication safety in the perioperative area.

Through this collaboration, BD and Codonics will develop a new solution that aims to intercept medication errors and streamline documentation for IV bolus injections by leveraging BD Intelliport™ technology and Codonics Safe Label System technology.

    • The BD Intelliport™ System: is the first and only solution to provide real-time dose measurement and clinical alerts at the point of injection while wirelessly sending captured information directly into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) following medication administration.
    • The Codonics Safe Label System (SLS): is recognized leader in safe medication management installed in more than 7,000 operating rooms worldwide.

“We’ve found the ideal partner in BD, enabling us to further enhance medication safety in the perioperative environment,” said Peter O. Botten, president and CEO of Codonics. “This partnership enables our existing installed base to easily introduce additional medication safety enhancements by adding BD Intelliport™ technology. It also enables future customers to take advantage of a fully integrated system.”

By integrating the two technologies, the goal of the joint solution will be to seamlessly identify medication and concentration at the time of administration, helping healthcare workers to intercept medication errors and automate medication administration recordkeeping. Both products have received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have been honored with Medical Design Excellence Awards and Best Practice recognitions from Frost & Sullivan.

“Partnering with Codonics will enable us to better serve healthcare providers who are increasingly focused on delivering safer and more efficient outcomes,” said Lisa Nibauer, vice president and general manager of BD’s Vascular Management Systems. “The combined solution will enable us to leverage the power of technology to improve healthcare delivery by providing our customers with a seamless medication management experience from syringe preparation to delivery.”
