U.S. Coast Guard

The Coast Guard monitors and ensures bridges crossing navigable waters of the United States are not unreasonable obstructions to navigation. The Coast Guard’s authorities include issuing permits for construction or alteration of bridges over navigable waters; regulating the operations of drawbridges; ensuring that bridges are properly lighted to facilitate safe passage of vessels; and managing the alteration of bridges declared by the Coast Guard to be unreasonable obstructions to navigation.
