LEDline® LED traffic guidance lighting is being installed on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge approaches to improve the safety of the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) employees during contraflow situations. Here LEDline® will automatically create the lit crossover lanes during rush hours, eliminating the need for employees to have to physically go out onto the road/bridge to manhandle and install, then later collect, all the cones when creating then taking down the cones during crossover lane contraflow situations.
When congested traffic flows use one of the lanes on the other side of the road/bridge's infrastructure, to increase the road/bridge's capacity and reduce traffic congestion in one direction, the process is called contraflow. Here, at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge approaches, instead of physically having to place the cones whilst traffic is speeding inches from them, MDTA employees will now be able to create the lit guidance LEDline® crossover lanes, with the flick of a switch.
The LEDline® used is both economical and efficient here, since, in addition to removing the requirement to physically handle the cones, deploying and then collecting them, all of which took a lot of time, during which, traffic congestion often got worse. Therefore, by automating the crossover lanes, a lot of time is saved, which in turn should reduce the need for traffic to slow down so much. As such, LEDline® should not only increase employee safety but, by saving the cone deployment and recovery time, should also help the Chesapeake Bay Bridge's traffic capacity, hopefully, further reducing traffic congestion there.
